  2. HOW TO USE HOUSE:
  3.  
  4. The buttons ICON,S,M,L,^^^,<,>
  5. Can be used anytime to make HOUSE
  6. small, medium, large, thin,
  7. narrower, wider,etc.
  8.  
  9.  
  10. NOTICE that after you press a button,
  11. the MENUBOX in the CENTER of your HOUSE
  12. has a new menu that ALSO contains
  13. controls that could size, move, etc. 
  14.  
  15. USUALLY WHEN YOU CLICK A BUTTON
  16. you select a new MODE, which
  17. in turn selects a related sub-menu
  18. in the MENUBOX (CENTER SCREEN).
  19.  
  20. To use the MENUBOX FUNCTIONS, click
  21. the abbreviated LABEL portion of
  22. the display in the menu box, such as
  23. LMB - for Left Menu Bar.
  24.  
  25. Just MOVING your Mouse OVER THE MENUBOXES
  26. changes the messages you see...
  27. indicating what the MENUBOX FUNCTION
  28. will do IF you CLICK it.
  29.  
  30. Some MENUBOX Functions are nested more than
  31. one LAYER deep, which only means that
  32. sometimes, SELECTING A MENUBOX FUNCTION
  33. might only CALL-UP a 'deeper' MENUBOX, 
  34. containing 'sub functions.'
  35.  
  36. After using some functions
  37. You MAY NEED to RE-CLICK
  38. the MAIN BUTTONS to reselect
  39. the MODE you want to use,
  40. such as MENU or FILES mode.
  41. Just 'seeing a file list'
  42. doesn't mean you are always
  43. in FILE mode.
  44.  
  45. HOW DOES HOUSE WORK? ******************************************
  46.  
  47. HOUSE keeps one menu on-board, with up to 200 programs.
  48. You can easily load others by DOUBLE-CLICKING
  49. their name, (HOUSE.hse, YOUR.HSE, etc)
  50. in any FILE LISTING. 
  51.  
  52. By DOUBLE CLICKING any LIST, you will activate
  53. the item in the list! So....your menu launches menu
  54. items/programs, file lists launch files, etc..all
  55. with a DOUBLE CLICK!  REMEMBER THAT!
  56.  
  57. You can DOUBLE CLICK the TOP WINDOW (ROOF)
  58. to DIRECTLY LAUNCH MENU programs.
  59.  
  60. So....that's what you do...DOUBLE CLICK to launch!
  61. Select a BUTTON/MODE, such as FILES, then
  62. LAUNCH DIRECTLY from the FILE LIST, or
  63. use MENUBOX FUNCTIONS to do things like
  64. set Windowstates, change fonts, delete,
  65. copy, get info, etc, etc, etc!

  68. NEVER FEAR, HOUSE is VERY SMART and has
  69.  "ARE YOU SURE??" messages WHEN YOU NEED THEM!
  70.  
  71. DOUBLE CLICK with confidence because it is SAFE
  72. to do so....EXPLORE HOUSE...it's fun to use,
  73. and easy.  Menus are easy to use, and ADDING ITEMS
  74. TO YOUR MENU is easy too.  Using the FILE LIST, select any file
  75. or program and CLICK - ADD in the MENUBOX.
  76. It's THAT easy!  Your file is NOW a MENU ITEM!
  77. Click the menu text boxes to edit your new menu
  78. item's description.

  83. How to "Get Around"
  84.  
  85.  It can be a little tricky at first...here's what to do.
  86.   
  87.  The FASTEST way to move your HOUSE around is by CLICKING
  88.  the MOVING SQUARES--to the right of the main buttons.
  89.  The moving squares represent NINE screen positions...
  90.  the four corners, and center positions of your screen.
  91.  A single click on any square places your HOUSE in a 
  92.  similar position to the square in the box. 
  93.  
  94.  You can also press the button "P". (PLACEMENT)
  95.  This is a more traditional way of moving Windows
  96.  ...using A MENU bar to drag HOUSE to some 
  97.  point on your screen.
  98.  
  99.  You will soon notice that HOUSE does NOT let you move
  100.  to a position off--screen.  HOUSE normally corrects for 
  101.  'overshoots' of the edges.  In other words, HOUSE will
  102.  always pick an address that's on your screen!"

  104.  
  105.  CLICKING the HOUSE.FORM to SIZE it...... 
  106.  
  107.  It takes some getting used to, but
  108.  clicking  around the form will change
  109.  the size of your House...you'll see how things work
  110.  with a little practice.  All modes, except CITY mode,
  111.  will size HOUSE when a FORM.CLICK occurs.  Try clicking
  112.  the right edges of the HOUSE. 
  113.  
  114.  If you just want a FEW MORE LINES OF YOUR LISTS,
  115. click the +2L, +5L, or +10L Buttons at the bottom
  116. of the HOUSE.   These buttons will increase the HEIGHT 
  117. of the HOUSE by the number of LINES on the button.
  118. The actual amount of height will depend on the FONT
  119. SIZE you are using at the time.

  123.  MEMORIZED POSITIONS:
  124.  
  125.  Once your HOUSE is the way you want it...
  126.  CLICK the SET button and then click DEC & MEM to STORE
  127.  your layout.  (MENUBOX) 
  128.  
  129.  HOUSE can store or recall your color schemes & layouts.
  130.  Your screen position, HOUSE size, Window colors
  131.  and Font size, Font colors & more are stored for later recall.
  132.  To recall..the sequence is SET-DEC-DO-.
  133.  (Resetting a layout takes about 3-5 seconds...32 changes occur each time.)

  140. **UNDERSTANDING THE MAIN BUTTONS********

  144.     These buttons can help you size & place your HOUSE.
  145.     Icon = Make House as small as possible.
  146.     S = Make HOUSE very small, but not an ICON.
  147.     M = Make House Medium sized.
  148.     L = Make House LARGE.
  149.     P = PLACE/MOVE House manually.  
  150.         NOTE: Clicking the CPU Window (Blinking Squares)
  151.             will place/move HOUSE very rapidly..try it!
  152.     ^^^ Toggles between THIN and NORMAL HOUSE Height.
  153.             Think of this as the door to the ROOF if
  154.         you like! 
  155.     <  Makes HOUSE Narrower
  156.     >  Makes HOUSE WIDER
  157.  
  158.  RUN:     In SMALL-Menu-Mode this button runs the current HOUSE MENU item.    
  159.     In ALL other modes (bigger sizes) this button allows
  160.     you to set the WINDOW STATE before the next launch of programs.
  161.         You can then RUN the menu program or currently selected
  162.     file by clicking !M  or !F in the MENU BOX. (Center)  
  163.  
  164. SET:    
  165.       Decorate: 
  166.              DO - Recalls one of seven sets of Colors, Fonts,
  167.          & Screen Positions from Memory (BLUEPRINTS).
  168.         (Redecorates your HOUSE from memory!)
  169.          MEM - Memorizes your current HOUSE colors,
  170.         Font Size, and Screen Location.
  171.     Color: (TOP RM INF MNU DIR EXT HSE T/B)
  172.         Allows you to change the colors of the various
  173.             display lists, info Windows & more, within HOUSE itself.
  174.         ? = Help (Explains how to change colors) 
  175.         T/B toggles use between COLOR-AS-TEXT and COLOR-AS-BACKGROUND.
  176.     Font:  SML SM MED ML L VL XL BLD Chg
  177.         HOUSE lets you set new Font Sizes or CHANGE Font Types.
  178.         (Does not affect system fonts. You would use the 
  179.                   Control Panel to do that.)  
  180.     PSW: Allows you CHANGE the CURRENT PASSWORD for THIS SESSION! 
  181.     TIM: Toggles the CLOCK in the upper right, on or off.
  182.          (The clock can be DRAGGED to new locations.)    
  183.     CPU: Toggles the 'thinking lights' on or off! Those dizzy
  184.          little blinking squares! 
  185.          (Quick Placement Window still works, regardless.)
  186.     GRB: GRAB...Makes HOUSE 'come out on top' if MOUSE passes over it.
  187.          On/Off toggle. 
  188.          When GRAB is ON, (Default) HOUSE will grab
  189.          the FOCUS anytime your mouse passes over the form.
  190. **!!!**    END: END HOUSE Session..quit the program....board up the HOUSE!
  191.              REMEMBER TO QUIT....the command is
  192.              SET-END 
  193.     
  194. ?:    ?  : Get this help file.  Need HELP or have questions? Use the question mark button to
  195.     FND: Find the HOUSE.EXE and the HOUSE resident directory.
  196.     SYS: Show free RAM and diskspace.
  197.     Hst: See/Edit HOSt Profiles for file.ext associated launches
  198.     Abt: Show HOUSE Banner
  199.     Psw: Show Current Password
  200.     CMI: CONFIRM MENU INFORMATION: Remove Items from menu if they are
  201.          not on disk!
  202.     TSK: Launch the Windows Task Manager - See current tasks.

  204. CITY:    Draw colorful cities automatically!  Just move your MOUSE AROUND!    
  205.     MOD: Sets the PEN color-logic for drawing.  AND NOT OR XOR INVERT & More
  206.     OBJECTS:  Choose from
  207.           TRE Trees
  208.           BLD Buildings  LWR Low Rise Buildings
  209.           RF  Roof or hills
  210.           CLd Clouds
  211.                   Sqr Little Squares
  212.     S  : Set object zoom size, and hollow/fill attribute of Houses/Buildings.
  213.     PS : Switch your pen's drawing sides from left to right.    
  214.     Lnd: Creates a landscape background effect..erases current drawing!
  215.            (Best with SVGA and 32K-colors mode. Choose a BRIGHT Background First.)    
  216.     CLR: Clears (ERASES) your picture!
  217.     AD : AUTODRAW COMPUTER GENERATED CITIES 
  218.     N  : Normal..temporary drawing mode. No cut & paste.
  219.     P  : Permanent drawing - paste mode.  Allows cut & paste.
  220.     Clp: Copies House drawing to the clipboard.
  221.             
  222.       DRAWING ACTION is activated (ON/OFF) by your MOUSE CLICKS.!!!

  224.  
  225.   OH:    OPEN HOUSE!!!  RUN up to 20 programs/files at once!
  226.      LOAD ANY SMALL    HOUSE and you can use OH to launch
  227.      the ENTIRE MENU as an OPEN HOUSE.  Remember..you can
  228.      remove items from your menu before a launch using the remove
  229.      menu function...in case you decide against launching a couple
  230.      items.  Just take them off the menu!  You can always re-load the
  231.      original.    
  232.  
  233. AGAIN:    
  234.     SAV: Save a list to--disk of the programs & files you have
  235.          been using...up to 100.  Logs the time you used them too.
  236.     Rmv: Removes a single item from your on-board launch-log.
  237.     DAB: Remove ALL launch-log items BEFORE the 
  238.         currently selected item...(Erases your tracks...)
  239.  
  240. MENU:    Get: Load a new HOUSE menu from disk.
  241.     Sav: Save the current menu to disk.
  242.     Rmv: Remove an ITEM (Room) from your HOUSE menu (Doesn't delete the file).
  243.     Srt: A fast way to sort the menu alphabetically.
  244.     Add: Add ON additional Rooms by merging-in another House menu.
  245.     New: Start a new HOUSE menu from the ground up......
  246.     Dup: Duplicate a menu item...'clone' a room.
  247.     Clr: Clears the menu-item Command Line (Furniture!)              
  248.              info passed to the program at run-time.
  249.          Of COURSE..you CAN edit your HOUSE menu directly
  250.          by clicking your mouse inside any of the MENU TEXT boxes!        
  251.     Fnd: Where is this room?  Hansel, Gretel, and HOUSE all know!
  252.              But only HOUSE will take you there.
  253. DIR:    MAK: Make a directory on disk.  Otherwise known as a hallway!
  254.     REM: Remove a directory from disk.    
  255.     CDI: Copy the FILENAMES, DATES & SIZES to a record-file
  256.          on disk.  Only INFO is recorded, not the files themselves.
  257.          Think of it as a PHOTOCOPY of the current directory listing
  258.          but with more info.
  259.     CHG: Rename Directory
  260.  
  261. FILES:    Add: Adds the currently selected FILE or program to your HOUSE MENU!.
  262.          HOUSE chooses HOSTS when needed, but you can change them if
  263.          you like...just click on the menu info-window text & 'edit away'.        
  264.     Put: Puts the currently selected file in the COMMANDLINE
  265.          of the CURRENT menu item.  Like furniture in a room,
  266.          this info compliments' the room. You could PUT a file
  267.          called pic.bmp into a room with PAINTBRUSH...then
  268.          it would run with PIC.BMP already loaded.
  269.     Inf: Shows file date & size for the currently selected file.
  270.      Cpy: Allows you to setup for file coping. TAKE your time here!
  271.          HOUSE is rather 'unusual' in the way it copies! 
  272.          Once you 'get the hang of it' you may find it VERY useful!  
  273.          The file names are 'cached' so you can easily copy a big list
  274.              of programs to several places, without re-loading
  275.              the file names.  Just remember to CLEAR them when you should.    
  276.     Del: Delete 1 file at a time, or ALL in the current listing!
  277.          Both have 'ARE YOU SURE?'..of course!    
  278.     Chg: Rename, Change attributes or duplicate. Has sub menu.
  279.          PIF: Can create an instant DOS PIF for exe,com or bat files!
  280.     Typ: View Files by type, size, date, time, attributes, etc.
  281.     REF: REFRESH the current file listing.  This is done by HOUSE
  282.          most of the time..but when you need to...it's a quick way
  283.          to get an updated files listing.

  286. DOUBLE CLICK ANY FILE LIST TO LAUNCH a program, file, picture, macro 
  287.  or any other program/sourcefile. 
  288.  
  289. THE ROOF:
  290.  The menu-ruler at the top of your HOUSE is called
  291.  the ROOF.  Click it to latch or unlatch your MENU.
  292.  Moving the mouse across the roof will select your
  293.  menu items.  You can then double click to launch, or
  294.  use RUN to set a  launch state first.
  295.  
  296.  The roof has HOTKEYS. (WHEN the ROOF HAS THE FOCUS)
  297.  
  298.  USE your SHIFT key for caps and type:
  299.   
  300.  P = To Set Security Mode ON: PASSWORDS required to get into HOUSE.
  301.  S = To Show System Free RAM
  302.  D = To Show Free Drive Space
  303.  
  304.  (SPACE) = To Show TIME/DATE
  305.  (ENTER) = To RUN the current menu item.
  306.  - = To Go BACK ONE MENU ITEM on the list.
  307.  + = To Go FORWARD ONE MENU ITEM on the list.

  310. MISCELLANEOUS:
  311.  
  312.  HOST programs are determined by HOUSE. Double click the HOST-LIST
  313.  for more info on editing HOST files.
  314.  
  315. DOUBLE CLICKING an EXTENSION LIST will allow you to ENTER A CUSTOM
  316.  file pattern.  Such as *.* or more elaborately...  House.*; H*.hse;Names*.??  
  317.  In other words..compound filters can be entered...separated by SEMI-COLONS.
  318.  
  319. DOUBLE CLICKING THE CPU WINDOW: (The moving squares..will RUN TASK MANAGER,
  320. and send it a keystroke, the default is ALT-T which will TILE the Windows
  321. on your desktop.  If you type C after clicking the CPU window, this keystroke
  322. will be ALT-C as in CASCADE...(you still have to DOUBLE click to activate..)
  323.  CPU-Window DESKTOP-ARRANGEMENT LETTERS ARE:
  324.         T=Tile (Default)
  325.     C=Cascade
  326.

  328. The JUMP buttons will alternately select the bottom and/or top of the
  329. list you select. Click JUMP to view the bottom/top items of any list.

  334. WHAT ABOUT HELP!
  335.  
  336. Help is available within the MENUBOX FUNCTIONS
  337. for some modes, meaning you have ON-LINE help.
  338. Also, NOTICE the TOP WINDOW for MESSAGES.
  339. Many functions will display HELP along the way
  340. at the top of the HOUSE.
  341. It's easy to find 'good help these days'...
  342. THE HOUSE-HELP' like to party on the roof!

  344. Once you press HELP, help mode is activated,
  345. which means a few additional messages will
  346. POP UP as you mouse around. They appear just once,
  347. and you can disable them by
  348. clicking the CPU window, then typing   d  .

  351. HOW TO:
  352.  
  353. Edit a menu:      Click on the text boxes at the top of your HOUSE.
  354.         Any typing instantly becomes the new data for the
  355.         menu item you are working on.  You can even use
  356.         the Text Windows like a 'Commandline', by putting
  357.         the program name, commandline, and path in directly.
  358.  
  359. Add Menu Items: Click files to see files. Click ADD in the menu box
  360.         when the program/file you want is selected. This will
  361.         add the file to your menu, with host programs if needed.
  362.  
  363. FAST ROOM ADD!:    Click a filename & type !  For an instant menu item..no
  364.         questions asked!
  365.  
  366. FAST  REMOVE!:    When viewing the menu LIST, click any item & type !
  367.         It's a no questions asked way of removing rooms!
  368.  
  369.  
  370. Push a file into the HOST PROFILE:
  371.  
  372.         When in files view, click on any exe and type $.
  373.         (Your HOSTS will hold parties for cash! $)
  374.         The $ will push the program into your HOST PROFILE.
  375.         You are then asked for the EXTENSION you wish the HOST
  376.         to support.
